What is an induction Motor

What is an induction motor

Induction motors also called 'Asynchronouns motor' are the workhorses of the industrial world, powering everything from pumps and conveyor belts to fans and household appliances. These remarkable devices operate on the principles of electromagnetic induction and are known for their robust construction and reliability

Why it's Called Induction motor :

the name of induction motor is inspired from his working principe ,which based on electromagnetic induction , it's composed from to part : Stator and Rotor

Stator :

the Stator is the static part of the motor it is formed by a ring of electromagnets designed as a cylinder to produce a rotating magnetic field. Copper wire wound throughout the cylinder’s interior creates magnetic poles, with one pole of each magnet facing towards the center. When alternating current flows through these wire coils, they form a pair of alternating poles. The alternating poles create an alternating magnetic field that rotates with unified strength

Rotor:

the Rotor is the moving part of the motor, it made of a group of electromagnets arranged around a cylinder, and it is housed inside the stator. The magnet fields activated within the rotor are attracted to the magnetic field produced by the stator.  Hence why the magnetic field induced in the stator induces a magnetic field in the rotor.
we distincts two types of induction motor related to the rotor structure

Working Principle :

induction motor is one way supply which mean that it need to be supplied by  one alternating source from the stator , when the stator windings energized it will creat a rotating magnetic field with the frequency of the power supply , this rotating magnetic field will induce an EMF (electromotive force) on the rotor winding due to the Farday Induction Law , this EMF in thier turn will creat an induction cuurent on the rotor windings whoes short-circuited , finally according to Lenz Force this induced current with the rotating magnetic field of the stator creat an mechanical force so the rotor will feel a torque which will make the rotor to rotate in the direction of the rotating magnetic field.

Types of Induction Motors :

like Alternanig electrical sources we have single and three phase sources, induction motors are divesied in two categories Single and Three phase induction motor

Single Phase Induction motor :

The single-phase induction motor is not self-starting. A single-phase AC current supplies the primary winding and produces a pulsating magnetic field. These motors are designed to operate from single-phase supply and are manufactured in large quantities for use in homes, offices, factories, etc. There are five types of single-phase induction motors:
  • Capacitor start induction motor
  • Capacitor run induction motor
  • Capcitor start and run induction motor
  • Split phase induction motor
  • Shaded pole induction motor

Three Phase Induction motor:

Three-phase induction motors are self-starting, so they require no starting device like single-phase motors, we distincs two types of three phase induction motors according to the rotor structure :
  • Squerriel Cage induction motor
  • Slip Ring induction motor

Applications of Induction motor:

the induction motor is used in a wide range of applications we note some of these :
  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Lifts
  • Drilling Machines
  • Fans
